Most of the people in the town, being significantly younger than she, accepted the façade of the nice little old lady she had built up in front of her rather more colorful history. She had even established enough of a reputation for baking comforting dishes for friends and neighbors that everyone suggested she try the contest. Only when they saw the exotic, otherworldly contents of her spice cabinet--or perhaps watched her cut butter into flour with fistfuls of throwing knives--did they begin to suspect that she had once been something more than a grandmotherly type.

He regarded the contents of his usual kit: ranks of vials with neat labels and brightly colored contents, a bottle of preserving alcohol, and the tiny knives and mortar and spoons to process findings in the field. As someone who had survived on the strength of his poisons, it felt strange and scary to lift out vial after vial and set them aside. But his life had gotten bigger than just poisons, and he would prove his mastery of less toxic herbs as well, so long as he didn't accidentally kill any of the judges with murderous macaroons or deadly dinner rolls.

The advent of Spring brings with it the arrival of a variety of songbirds to enliven the mornings. Thrillingly, local ornithologists insist these new arrivals are very new: they appear to have followed us home through the time anomaly earlier, hailing from points much more distant than we visited ourselves. Even more pleasingly, at least two species identified are also very old, previously (our previously, that is) classified as extinct, suggesting we can look forward to either rediscovery or resurrection events someday.

The workshop of the Shipwreck Repair Collective rang with the sounds of arguments as much as of crafting as the application date approached. Some wanted to practice baking, which required creating all manner of lifts and mixers and ovens in the workshop, while others wanted to prioritize the mecha suit that would make all of that irrelevant eventually. Those in the collective who had not become fixated on the contest watched from their workbenches in bemusement, fussily dusting away metal shavings and flour in equal measure.

"Sorry, sorry, I'm here, can you--" she said in a rush, thrusting out armfuls of lidded containers and parchment packets to her lover at the top of a vertical tunnel. She hadn't spent that much time above ground since before the two of them met, but the Buried Gardens and cave system weren't exactly compatible with baking the way her apartment was. Still, there was a special joy in watching gemstone claws peel open the packets and fish out her latest experiment with Candy Cap mushroom cookies or glowing breads, edible fusions of her world and theirs.

In our efforts to set all our clocks forward an hour for Daylight Savings Time, we seem to have overshot the mark by a decade or two. While we work on returning all impacted people and regions to the correct time period, we encourage you to enjoy the novel foods, music, shows, and fashion of this future. Though the temptation will be strong to seek out your future self for, shall we say, financial insights, remember that time streams are easily disrupted and unpredictable, so you may find it more fulfilling to collect experiences than lottery numbers while here.

It found him outside, alone and sad, showing all the signs of being friendless and unloved, so it followed him home. Oh, it did the responsible thing and sent out Found Human messages around the universe, waiting to see if anyone had lost him and was searching for him. In its core, though, it knew it would keep him, already imagining the fun they would have together once he got used to having a pan-dimensional entity taking care of him properly.

When the first whispers of the contest had reached hir ears in the bakery, ze knew two things: ze absolutely had to participate, and ze absolutely couldn't let Leslie know it was hir. Ze didn't want an unfair advantage or unreachable expectations from hir boss at Sea Mink, so a disguise would be just as important as a mastery of pastry. Somewhere along the way, thinking of mask designs while kneading and inventing new tart fillings while sculpting, the two things started to merge, flavors and textures melding into something new, like hir.

The Plush Poppet Toy and Hobby store has noticed some unexpected additions on their shelves, ranging from oddly-shaped dry gourds to cardboard boxes to smooth rocks. The newcomers have arranged themselves attractively amongst the teddy bears and building blocks, and they have resisted--persistently--being removed or relocated. The staff's working theory is that they, too, wish to be toys, so consider picking up a new play companion for any of the more eccentric children in your life.

The sort of person who joined a baking competition was not the sort of person who left well enough alone or stuck with safe choices. So in the weeks leading up to the application date, the kitchens of Lewisia bubbled and burned with ever more ambitious prototyping of strange new baked goods. Emergency services braced themselves against the sudden influx of exploded ovens, singed eyebrows, and vengeful yeast beasts.

As is traditional, Lewisia will be on holiday for the month of February. Posts will resume on Friday, March 1st, on their usual schedule.

As is also traditional, the new year of Lewisia will bring a few new surprises. Something is cooking around Lake Lewisia, but will it be delicious or disastrous? I hope you look forward to it either way. In the meantime, remember to be the strangeness you want to see in the universe.

The Temples of Winding and Unwinding were not rival sects, given to territorial wars or political clashes through their histories, but partners in an endless dance. They typically operated out of the same community buildings, trading off days for services and responsibilities, their calendars a ballet of scheduling. Even their adherents tended to shift allegiance over time, called in some life stages to the dismantling of things into useful parts and in others to the piecing together of parts into cohesive wholes.

Applications are now open for the first annual Great Lewisian Bake Off competition, which will take place later this year. Amateur bakers of all backgrounds are encouraged to submit their application and samples for consideration by our panel of judges, headed by Leslie of Sea Mink Pastries. Even those who do not make it to the first round of competition will receive vouchers for specialty flours at the Old Mill, so for those not certain of their skills, there’s no downside in shooting for the moon (pie).

New Bakes
Quick Breads: not as sweet as a loaf cake, not dependent on the patient work of yeast, quick breads have always been a great option, and ours are really quick, thanks to special time-altering loaf pans. Come watch us take them from batter to baked in an instant, made fresh to order. But eat them quick, before staleness or mold can get them (approximately five minutes after baking).

Sandwich: Smoked Mushroom (a variety of locally harvested mushrooms, preserved with incense smokes to carry both the taste and spirit of the forest, layered up thick on hearty bread, suitable for wrapping in a cloth and tucking away as one hikes up into the hills in search of adventure)

Experimental Cookie of the Month
January Theme: Birthday

Confetti Explosion: a classic sugar cookie enlivened by an assortment of flavored sprinkles, so each bite is a little different and brings with it a cascade of (eco-friendly, evaporating) confetti, you'll feel like a pinata but without the whole beaten-with-sticks part

One vote token provided with each cookie purchased. Vote for or against this variety in the boxes by the register. Winning varieties will get added to our roster for a year.

Advance Announcement: Fire up your ovens and grease your bundts! Applications will be accepted soon for contestants in the first-ever Lewisian Bake-Off.

The herder held their crook up in thanks to the driver who had patiently waited for them and their flock to make it through the intersection. The trouble with both herd animals and wandering spirits was that they tended to cling to their habits harder than most, and little things like the passage of time or traffic did not interest them in the slightest. Herding ghost sheep, however worthwhile the promise of their delicate and fluffy ephemeral fleeces was, tended to thus be an exercise in both repetition and situational awareness for any shepherd trying to keep them.

Untold ages before, it had begun as funeral rites, the giving over of their dead to the mycelial neighbors in the forest. Fungi could, in time, learn to break down almost anything, and they were nearly as adaptable when it came to enmeshing themselves with living partners. Eventually, both parties stopped waiting for death to mediate the introductions, and they became a people of walking rot and wandering roots, networked by hyphae and studded with fruiting bodies.

Neither feral nor wild, and certainly not domesticated, she was simply Cat, just fae-touched enough to have adventure as a lifestyle rather than a cause of death. The toddler, of course, knew none of this, only that the Nice Kitty was soft and warm, when his wanderings away from home had otherwise been decidedly cold and miserable thus far. Fostering foundling humans was usually better left to dogs, who had more patience and less good sense, but Cat could smell adventure on the child, several years off, provided someone kept him fed and free in the meantime.

Family visits were always a bit embarrassing: showing off one’s awkward first attempts at homemaking, trying to explain away the shortcomings of whatever home could be afforded by the young and newly independent, caught between the child’s need for approval and the adult’s need for independence. She showed her family around the little planet, highlighting its charming geological formations even as she tried to brush aside yet another garbage patch that had somehow escaped her frantic cleaning efforts. “Well, it’s a bit of a fixer-upper,” her primary manifesting element commented, “but it’s good for a young deity to have a project.”
